Dolphin
Several
dolphin species occur in Florida costal waters. The most common of these
is the bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), which feed on
common fish like mullet, sheepshead, pinfish, and flounder.
Bottle-nosed dolphins show a high degree of intelligence, have a wide
range of vocalizations, and may cooperate in fishing or taking care of
injured conspecifics.
Swimming with or feeding dolphins can
be dangerous for both human and dolphin and should not be attempted. Male
dolphins may be aggressive in defending territory and can cause injury
to humans swimming into their proximity. Additionally, dolphins
may become attracted to boats, and become nuisances to fishermen.
